Book Description
The rise and fall of the ancient Chinese towns are one of the most typical, vivid, and intuitive portrayals of the long-standing and splendid part of Bashu civilization . In ancient times, Sichuan, with relatively developed small- scale peasant economy and handicraft industry, had fertile soil and abundant products. They created the prosperity of Sichuan’s traditional fair trade and promoted the development of the town and its market. Sichuan has a large number of towns with a long history and a considerable scale. The construction of the “Ten Ancient Towns” is a silhouette. For Chengdu Plain, which is reputed as “the one town in ten miles” is even more evident.

Rural China, 1901–1949

Rural China, 1901–1949 PDF Author: Wang Xianming
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000226905
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 426
Book Description
Highlighting the interwoven relationship between Chinese rural society and larger historical forces, this book charts the evolution of China’s rural society from 1901 to 1949, concentrating on the major changes of this period and the scenarios developed to modernize rural society during the half century leading up to the Revolution. The modern history of rural China is one of sweeping institutional and structural transformation across many dimensions. As the first half of the twentieth century unfolded, against a backdrop of turbulent changes across a country that underwent industrialization, urbanization and modernization, China's agriculture, rural population and rural communities encountered many crises, but also showed remarkable resilience and capacity for adaptation and reform. In each of the six chapters, the author delves into one aspect or examines one period of this massive transformation, and identifies the social, economic, political and cultural significance of these tumultuous processes at work. The book will appeal to both scholars and general readers interested in modern Chinese history and the transformation of rural China.

Cultural Heritage Politics in China

Cultural Heritage Politics in China PDF Author: Tami Blumenfield
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461468744
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 297
Book Description
This volume explores China’s cultural heritage ideology and policies from three interrelated perspectives: the State and World Heritage tourism; cultural heritage tourism at undesignated sites, and the cultural politics of museums and collections. Something of a cultural heritage designation craze is happening in China. This is new within even the last five to ten years. Officials at many levels now see heritage preservation as a means for commoditizing their regions. They are devoting new resources and attention to national and international heritage designations. Thus, addressing cultural heritage politics in a nation dedicated to designation is an important project, particularly in the context of a rapidly growing economy. This volume is also important because it addresses a very wide range of cultural heritage, providing an excellent sample of case studies: historic vernacular urban environments, ethnic tourism, scenic tourism, pilgrimage as tourism, tourism and economic development, museums, border heritage, underwater remains, and the actual governance and management of the sites. This volume is an outstanding introduction to cultural heritage issues in China while contributing to Chinese studies for those with greater knowledge of the area.
