Turned On!

Turned On! PDF Author: S. P. Perone
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 1491743948
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 384
Book Description
No decade before or since witnessed cultural, technical, and social changes as dramatic as the 1960s. Pop culture reflected a transition from the rigid 1950s to the permissive 1970s. The Vietnam War spawned student protests, draft card burning, and a hippie counter-culture. Caught up in these turbulent times was author Sam Perone, a naïve young professor beginning his career at the tender age of twenty-three—young enough to run in student circles. Perone’s unlikely arrival in 1962 at a prestigious university—lacking credentials and experience—launched an erratic journey laced with angst, liberating diversions, exciting research, bitter conflicts, dismal failures, and exhilarating successes. In Turned On!, he shares his own life story against the backdrop of the times. A collection of personal experiences that characterize that turbulent decade, this memoir tells about the time Perone got tipsy during his university job interview; the weeks he slept in chemistry labs; the explosions, floods, flashes, pranks, and jolts that marked his early research; the wild parties fueled by lab alcohol; his unexpected “love affair” in 1967 San Francisco; the sometimes serious, sometimes disturbing, and always laughable instances of faculty clashes; and finally his pivotal involvement in the minicomputer revolution. Turned On! describes a personal journey toward self-realization in a world that was rapidly changing in fascinating ways. It captures the impact on campus life of historical events that defined the 1960s, but also provides insights to the inner workings of the academic world in that era and beyond.

Turn On, Tune In, Drift Off

Turn On, Tune In, Drift Off PDF Author: Victor Szabo
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0190699302
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 393
Book Description
Turn On, Tune In, Drift Off: Ambient Music's Psychedelic Past rethinks the history and socioaesthetics of ambient music as a popular genre with roots in the psychedelic countercultures of the late twentieth century. Victor Szabo reveals how anglophone audio producers and DJs between the mid-1960s and century's end commodified drone- and loop-based records as "ambient audio": slow, spare, spacious audio sold as artful personal media for creating atmosphere, fostering contemplation, transforming awareness, and stilling the body. The book takes a trip through landmark ambient audio productions and related discourses, including marketing rhetoric, artist manifestos and interviews, and music criticism, that during this time plotted the conventions of what became known as ambient music. These productions include nature sounds records, experimental avant-garde pieces, "space music" radio, psychedelic and cosmic rock albums, electronic dance music compilations, and of course, explicitly "ambient" music, all of which popularized ambient audio through vivid atmospheric concepts. In paying special attention to the sound of ambient audio; to ambient audio's relationship with the psychedelic, New Age, and rave countercultures of the US and UK; and to the coincident evolution of therapeutic audio and "head music" across alternative media and independent music markets, this history resituates ambient music as a hip highbrow framing and stylization of ongoing practices in crafting audio to alter consciousness, comportment, and mood. In so doing, Turn On, Tune In, Drift Off illuminates the social and aesthetic rifts and alliances informing one of today's most popular musical experimentalisms.

Dear Joan and Jericha - Why He Turns Away

Dear Joan and Jericha - Why He Turns Away PDF Author: Joan Damry
Publisher: Hachette UK
ISBN: 1398700614
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 338
Book Description
From the world-renowned agony aunts of award-winning podcast 'Dear Joan and Jericha' comes an unputdownable bible of sex and relationship advice on how to find, satisfy and maintain a husband, from dating right up until you or hubby pass away. We dedicate this tome to Mahmoud: surgeon, prophet, model and friend. Capable of performing up to 30 hysterectomies a day (often blindfolded), it was Mahmoud that begged us to put pen to papyrus and share our wisdom with all the lost ladies suffering in the world today. As much revered celebrities, living glamorous and wealthy lifestyles, we do of course come under fire. There has recently been vicious slander circulating, regarding a small handful of folk who have written to us with a problem, and having listened to our response, gone on to take their own lives. As if the two were somehow connected. These naysayers are generally bitter and jealous spinsters, taking perverse and sadistic pleasure in being vindictive and nasty, while no doubt masturbating at the same time. To these lonely ladies we would say, 'Go look in your own heart, knock ye there and ask yourself some difficult questions. Because you will find the real guilt writhing within ye, like maggots mating in yesterday's apple'. What we offer here is a lifeline, a service, much like the NHS, or perhaps more accurately, the AA. Joan and Jericha: AA for the heart. Affording you the opportunity to have a breakdown, call for a pick-up truck, stop off for a Full English whilst a hairy guy in a grubby onesie fumbles under your bonnet and tweaks at your wiring, before sending you on your way, lubricated, primed, pumped and pretty. With kind regards, Joan Damry and Jericha Domain OBE MBE (etc)

The Creative Turn

The Creative Turn PDF Author: Anne M. Harris
Publisher: Springer Science & Business
ISBN: 9462095515
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 188
Book Description
The conundrum of understanding, practising and teaching contemporary creativity is that it wants to be all things to all people. Almost all modern lists of creativity, creative thinking and how-to ‘becoming creative’ books begin with one premise: the creative individual/artist is not special, rather each of us is creative in a special way and these skills can – and must - be nurtured. Increasingly, industry and education leaders are claiming that creativity is the core skill to take us into a prosperous future, signalling the democratisation of creativity as industry. Yet centuries of association between aesthetics, mastery and creativity are hard to dismantle. These days, it is increasingly difficult to discuss creativity without reference to business, industry and innovation. Why do we love to think of creativity in this way and no longer as that rare visitation of the muse or the elite gift of the few? This book looks at the possibility that creativity is taking a turn, what that turn might be, and how it relates to industry, education and, ultimately, cultural role of creativity and aesthetics for the 21st century. In proliferating discourses of the commodification of creativity, there is one thing all the experts agree on: creativity is undefinable, possibly unteachable, largely unassessable, and becoming the most valuable commodity in 21st-century markets.

The Ethical Turn

The Ethical Turn PDF Author: David M. Goodman
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317605225
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 302
Book Description
Levinas (1969) claims that "morality is not a branch of philosophy, but first philosophy" and if he is right about this, might ethics also serve as a first psychology? This possibility is explored by the authors in this volume who seek to bring the "ethical turn" into the world of psychoanalysis. This phenomenologically rich and socially conscious ethics has taken centre stage in a variety of academic disciplines, inspired by the work of philosophers and theologians concerned with the moral fabric of subjectivity, human relationship, and socio-political life. At the heart of this movement is a reconsideration of the other person, and the dangers created when the question of the "Other" is subsumed by grander themes. The authors showcased here represent the exceptional work being done by both scholars and practitioners working at the crossroads between psychology and philosophy in order to rethink the foundations of their disciplines. The Ethical Turn: Otherness and subjectivity in contemporary psychoanalysis guides readers into the heart of this fresh and exciting movement and includes contributions from many leading thinkers, who provide fascinating new avenues for enriching our responses to suffering and understandings of human identity. It will be of use to psychoanalysts, professionals in psychology, postgraduate students, professors and other academics in the field.
